New York, 1849. Catherine Sloper, a young woman, lives with her wealthy father, Dr Austin Sloper, in the fashionable neighbourhood of Washington Square. Unlike her beautiful and capable mother, who died giving birth to her, Catherine is plain, clumsy and painfully self-conscious. She is helped by her Aunt Lavinia, her father's sister.

At a ball, Catherine meets the handsome Morris Townsend, who has squandered his modest inheritance on a tour of Europe. Encouraged by Aunt Lavinia, he skilfully begins to court Catherine, having learned that she stands to inherit a substantial annual income. Catherine falls in love with Morris, but her father is convinced that the young man is not interested in her daughter, but in her fortune…

Throughout June, Tuškanac Visiting presents a selection of films featuring costume designs by Edith Head, one of the most influential costume designers in cinema history. Over a career spanning more than fifty years, she collaborated with some of the twentieth century’s biggest film stars, including Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Elizabeth Taylor and Bette Davis, creating distinctive fashion and visual identities for nearly 500 film productions. Head won a record eight Oscars for costume design, and received a total of thirty-five nominations, making her the most-nominated woman in the history of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
