For centuries, the inhabitants of the small island of Île-aux-Coudres, in the St. Lawrence River in Canada, hunted beluga whales using techniques shaped by the river’s unique natural conditions.
After the 1920s, however, the practice gradually disappeared and was nearly forgotten. In 1962, a crew from the National Film Board of Canada, the renowned Canadian state film institution, arrived on the island and encouraged the residents to revive this traditional method of beluga hunting.
The project was led by director Pierre Perrault and cinematographer Michel Brault, who later became co-director during the making of the film.
