Tuškanac Visiting: Career Girls

Monday, 7 September 2026 at 9 pm

Directed by: Mike Leigh
United Kingdom, 1997

Annie is travelling by train to London to spend the weekend with Hannah, her flatmate from their student days at the Faculty of Polytechnics. The two young women, who have successful careers, haven't seen each other for six whole years. Hannah is still bitter towards her alcoholic mother, while Annie recounts her mother's search for a new boyfriend.

The mood between the two is tense – Annie is impressed by her friend's flat and financial income, while Hannah is somewhat bored by the get-together, realising how much divides them. As they go to sleep, each of them recalls what once connected them…

According to most critics, Career Girls is one of Mike Leigh's more modest films, although they acknowledge the director's characteristic knack for developing lifelike characters and their complex relationships. Particular praise was given to the acting performances, especially that of Katrin Cartlidge (Naked, Before the Rain, Breaking the Waves), who was nominated for the European Film Award for Best Actress. The film was not on the programme of the biggest festivals, but it was at the A-list festivals in Mar del Plata and Tokyo, where it competed in the main competition.
