The White Ribbon (Michael Haneke, 2009)
‘A cinematic story of the rise of fascism in a hitherto placid community’ stuns with disbelief, shames with its reality. All to such an extent that by the 1970s they had almost become a stable genre of European cinema. Over time we understand these stories ever more directly, questioning the intelligence of our own, repetitive society.
While preparing the production On the Edge of Reason, based on Krleža's novel, Ivica Buljan and Viktor Ivančić drew inspiration for their theatre company by watching films.
For the film audience, Surogatkino KIC is lending four films and presenting them as a series of discussion screenings.
The Conformist (Bernardo Bertolucci, 1970) is one of the best-directed films of all time, non-linearly narrating the slide of a Roman bon vivant from debauchery to crime.
The Fifth Seal (Zoltán Fábri, 1976) is an anthology farce about four café-going petty bourgeoisie who philosophise over drinks: their wisdom deserting them when the Hungarian SS knock at the door.
Mephisto (István Szabó, 1980). Power and theatre naturally go hand in hand, but when your Minister is Goebbels and your protector is Göring, the price of fame becomes exorbitant.
The White Ribbon (Michael Haneke, 2009) The most polished film by the great auteur observes the diligent order of village life and family values: evil emerges from social tradition as the source and forerunner of an as-yet-unborn ideology.
Following the screenings, which begin at 7 pm, the show's creators, Ivica Buljan and Viktor Ivančić, will be in conversation with critic Hrvoje Pukšec about the ideas, art and life reflected in these brilliant films and the forthcoming production at the theatre Komedija – to which we wish similar acclaim.
