We invite you to the opening of Lora Elezović's interactive exhibition, Kaleidoscope, on Tuesday, 14 July at 8pm at the Upper Floor Gallery of the Cultural and Information Centre (5 Preradovićeva Street, Zagreb).
Lora Elezović will present kaleidoscopes that act as portals to other temporal and spatial dimensions. As the exhibition's curator Marta Radman writes: "In Kaleidoscope, the artist clearly shifts the focus of her work from printmaking towards a painterly, object-based installation. The round paintings on wooden panels are combined with a 3D-printed structure, a kaleidoscope, and LED lighting. The traditional painting technique is thus merged with an optical device and contemporary technology, rather than existing as separate elements. The painting, the structure and the light act as a single work that changes depending on the viewing angle.
On the surface, the motifs are linked in a dense composition that can be viewed as a pictorial scene on its own. Viewed through the built-in kaleidoscope, the scene changes: individual details are deconstructed, multiplied and recombined into different relationships. The optical mechanism does not reproduce the image, but rather extracts a series of changing fragments from it. Motifs that were once recognizable become detached from their original arrangement; their edges dissolve, and colour and form transform into repeating visual structures. The stability of the painted composition thus proves to be fragile: what is composed as a whole on the surface of the work appears, through the kaleidoscope, each time as a new, temporary image. Interactivity in this cycle is linked to the work's fundamental structure. The viewer does not remain outside the image, but rather activates change through their gaze, their position in space, or simply by moving closer."
Lora Elezović was born in 1995 in Toronto, Canada. She graduated in 2020, earning a Master of Education in Visual Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb, specialising in Printmaking and Applied Graphics under the supervision of Professor Igor Čabraja and co-supervisor Professor Ines Krasić. She has exhibited in six solo exhibitions and sixty group exhibitions in Croatia and abroad. She is the recipient of a Special Mention from the jury at the international MiniMo Miniature Biennale (2019). She also received the Iva Vraneković – Vladimir Dodig Trokut: Artists to an Artist award at the 36th Youth Salon (2022), a Special Mention from the Award Committee of the 9th Croatian Graphics Triennial (2024), and the HDLU award for the best young artist (2024).
