In a psychedelic documentary essay inspired by Arthur Rimbaud's visionary poem A Season in Hell, we meet the spirit of the rebellious French poet who is about to embark on a journey through time. His dreamlike visions become portals opening up alternative timelines or “uchronies”.*

In a delirious adventure, Rimbaud is given the opportunity to meet revolutionary figures such as Emma Goldman, David Wojnarowicz and Marsha P. Johnson during his temporal adventure through the medium of film. Together they explore the possibilities of social change and reflect on the meaning of revolution in an age of dissipated illusions and bitter disappointments. A tribute to the rich history of experimental queer film throughout the 20th century. A celebration of the enfants terribles and dissident oddballs from across the globe. Uchronia seeks to find stimulating connections between Rimbaud's time and the current political climate. Can we better understand post-internet apathy and widespread defeatism if we view it through the eyes of a nineteenth-century decadent poet? Can his critique of national identity and the European concept of barbarism be relevant to the study of the European Union's current turn towards the far-right? How do we approach queer representation in the mainstream while transphobia rages unchecked? Is there a future for queer poets amidst the cultural and environmental ruins of hypercapitalism? Engaging with these rhetorical yet crucial questions, the film Uchronia simultaneously functions as an encouraging lesson in counter-history, a synaesthetic poem, and an exhilarating fireworks display of colourful affects.

* Uchronia (Gr. ou – not, chronos – time) is a subgenre of speculative fiction and science fiction based on an alternative history, exploring fictional worlds created by changing a key historical event.
